A few general, opening thoughts:
it should be warmer
it should stop snowing
I should stop eavesdropping so obviously in coffee shops.
I’m writing this from the café near my apartment, and I probably could have finished an hour ago, but I keep getting distracted listening to other people’s conversations. But, I’m pretty sure it’s worth it … there’s a mother cooing to her baby in French (Adorable. French babies are great. Big fan.) There’s a woman video-chatting with her friend, but she hasn’t said a word for the past 40 minutes! (Did she just need some eye contact? It’s unclear.) And then there’s the guy recording this little monologue into his phone: “When it rains it pours, when I sleep I’m a whore, when I sleep I snore. Sometimes all you can do is ask.” (WHAT!? I don’t know, but I love it.)
Anyway, I digress.
Coming up THIS WEEK!
The Ladles open for our dear friend and pal Sam Talmadge at The Burren! This is Sam’s album release show, and it’s going to be great. Show starts at 7pm.Come if you can! Tickets available here.
Another swing night at Starr Bar! Final dance before our beloved swing teacher Seraphina leaves this bustling metropolis for the wild Alaskan frontier. When she returns, she'll know how to fight grizzly's and catch salmon with her bare hands. But for now, she still teaches a killer swing lesson.
Lesson ($10) at 7, with a set to follow.
This week’s band – Chris McCarthy on keys, Simon Willson on bass, Aaron Edgcomb on drums, and Daniel Pencer on saxophone! Plus special guests TBA :)
I will be playing at Brooklyn Bazaar with Spaer.
Spaer is the music of Peter Spears - a mix of organic, acoustic and electric sounds. Some harsh, some gentle, always captivating. (Check it out here!)
Last year I had the pleasure of writing and recording some vocals for this album. When I got to Brooklyn this past fall, Peter asked me if I’d be interested in working out how to play the album live. (Yup.) So, several months later, here we are! I’m really excited about this show, and not just because I get to play electric guitar.
Show starts at 9 and we go on at 11:30. Hope to see you there!
Amalia will be playing at The Knitting Factory with Damon Smith and Rain. These songs are sounding better and better. Don’t trust me, come hear for yourself! Show starts at 9PM.
I spent the last week in Nashville with buddydude Ben Sanders working on a new recording for Amalia and we had FUN. We tracked guitar, bass, saxophone, drums, toy piano, real piano, very loud electric guitar, many layers of crunchy vocals i.e. the works. We’ll be getting together again in June to work on a second song, and releasing the two tracks sometime in the late summer.
Downright thrilled to announce that Amalia will be joining this year’s line up for the Otis Mountain Get Down Festival! Otis takes place in Elizabethtown at the base of a small mountain the second weekend of September (9/7 – 9), and it is a gooooood time. I would recommend checking out this festival even if I wasn’t playing it. Otis has sold out the past 2 years, so get your tickets now if you can!
This June, I will be teaching at Ashokan Western & Swing Week Fiddle and Dance Camp. I grew up going to this music camp and I think it's safe to say that Ashokan has played a major role in shaping and building the person and musician I am today. (I mean just look at this picture. Leather capris and a leather jacket!? I might have peaked...) I can't really express how special it feels to be returning now as a teacher. If you can, come to this camp! You will meet amazing people of all ages, make music, dance, put on a skit, learn something new. You'll eat good food, go to the sauna, take an outdoor shower, go swimming... the list goes on. Visit Ashokan's website to learn more!
Thanks so much for reading! Be well, let's talk soon!
much love, katie
