VOCAL SWING HARMONY CLASS
Tuesdays at 7pm
Dates: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 Make up date: 3/5

Learn to sing three-part swing harmony! Over the course of 8 weeks, students will learn several arrangements of swing tunes, drawing from the repertoire of the Boswell Sisters, the Mills Brothers and the Andrews Sisters. Working on these arrangements, students will not only learn some new songs, but will also get a grounding in some basic music theory, enabling them to hear their own harmonies and create their own parts. We will also spending some time working on vocal blend, rhythmic phrasing and improvisation/variation. Come learn the intricacies of swing harmony, and experience the joy of singing in a group!

JALOPY JR. FOLK MUSIC ENSEMBLE
Tuesdays at 4:30pm
Dates: 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/19, 2/26 Make up date: 3/5

Instrumental skills and technique are taught, but an emphasis is placed on how to be part of a band, how to interact and support each other, and how to solo and improvise as well as building upon repertoire. Students will also learn to sing while playing, and harmonize with other musicians. Music will be learned by ear, but sheet music and tab will also be provided. The goal of every session is a 35-60 minute final performance in the Jalopy Theatre or alternative space.

Social and cooperative group games as well as group discussions about the music are added to every lesson to enhance the experience, and allow the students to learn cooperatively. The students will have a short break during the period of two hours where they can bring a snack and interact with each other.

Banjos, fiddles and guitars are available to rent for the course, at a cost of $50. For more information, or to register, please visit www.jalopytheatre.org or email lynette@jalopytheatre.org
